Biography
When the French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau set out to write his Confessions in 1782, he proposed ‘to set before my fellow-mortals a man in all the truth of nature; this man shall be myself’. Philosophers have long engaged with the confessional form, from Plato and Augustine to Derrida and Cixous. Is biography an inherently philosophical medium? How does life inflect the philosophy of any given thinker? Or should we make a distinction between the facts of a philosopher’s life and their philosophical thought? Join us as we discuss the philosophy and the art of biography.

A Critical Biography
There are different types of biographies. Some commemorative biographies, which on occasion tend toward hagiography. James Eglinton has written a critical biography, which is focused upon the sources in order to tell the full story of Herman Bavinck's life, warts and all.

The Forum: Judging and Personality: What Does a Judge's Biography Tell Us?
Judges are human. They have past lives, experiences, views, and ideologies. Yet, they don the black robe and we try hard as a society to view them as uniform, neutral arbiters who determine the facts, apply them to the law, and reach resolution of cases. But how much do those personal experiences inform the way they see the cases and do their job? To address this question, much mooted during the run-up to the confirmation hearings of Justice Sonia Sotomayor, we have a remarkably astute panel: two nationally-prominent journalists who have written judicial biographies, and our own Judge Harry Edwards, from the D. C. Circuit. Please join us for what will surely be a stimulating conversation about how the "who" judges are affects what they do.

David McCullough's Biography of a Year: 1776
Best-selling historical writer and two-time Pulitzer winner David McCullough follows up his biography John Adams by focusing on a historic time rather than an individual: the momentous 12 months in the fight for independence. 1776 describes how a group of ragtag farmers were able to defeat the world's greatest empire with a great deal of suffering, determination, ingenuity, and, as McCullough notes, luck.
